“Sally Hawkins is just plain irresistible in this funny, touching and vital salute to women in the work force.”
- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
“The unexpected thing about “Made in Dagenham” is how entertaining it is.”
- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
This dramatic comedy tells the story of the 1968 strike at the Ford car plant in Dagenham east of London, where 187 female sewing machinists walked out in protest against sexual discrimination. After being re-classified as “unskilled workers,” the women put down their tools and strike, a fight that leads to the advent of the Equal Pay Act. The strikers unite behind a fast-talking, no-nonsense leader, using unpredictable humor, common sense, and courage to take on their corporate paymasters, the belligerent townspeople, and the government itself. The movie stars Sally Hawkins, best known for her Oscar-nominated role in “Happy-Go-Lucky,” and veteran character actor Bob Hoskins. The film is nominated for four British Independent Film Awards, including best actress for Hawkins and best supporting actor for Hoskins. Directed by Nigel Cole, who also directed “Calendar Girls.”
