Synopsis

This beautiful adventure, the latest from legendary filmmaker Carroll Ballard (The Black Stallion, Fly Away Home), has earned high praise and great reviews but is receiving only a limited theatrical release. Campbell Scott and Hope Davis star as the parents of Xan (Alexander Michaletos), a 12-year-old in South Africa who, when a crisis forces the farm family to move to Johannesburg, sets out by himself to return his pet cheetah Duma to the wild. Heading toward the Kalahari Desert, Xan and Duma encounter Ripkuna (Eamonn Walker), a drifter who can help them - if he can be trusted. Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan writes: "In a sane world, there would be dancing in the streets at the arrival of a film as magical and entertaining as Carroll Ballard's Duma." It's that rare family film, one that adults will also want to see on their own.

Directed by Carroll Ballard

Reviews for Duma

"Simultaneously innocent and sophisticated, this honestly emotional fable shows why every Ballard film--and his last was released almost a decade ago--is a special event."
-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

"Duma, and the sort of intelligent, visually rich filmmaking it represents, are endangered species."
-- Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com
