Our film series is our effort to encourage participation by many ethnic groups in Fresno. Our first three films were Swedish, African and Iranian. We intend to continue to show ethnically diverse films, as well as English language experimental and independent films.
We have begun to develop an advisory board that is diverse ethnically, by age, and by sexual orientation, so as to represent the cultural and aesthetic interests of the larger community. We will be open to community input and suggestions regarding film choices. We will, however, not refuse films based upon sexual content, political opposition, or public prejudice. We want to provide a film experience that is both joyful and thought provoking.
The enthusiasm Fresnans and others from The Valley have shown for this project has surprised us. Many bring a community-based orientation to this project. They love film, and particularly alternative film, for its accessibility to all cultures, for its appeal to young people, and for the gathering of people that occurs when film is shown in a public space. We have also attracted many people who are film buffs, who love movies and find that good film enriches their lives. They equate good film with a rich cultural and intellectual life, and find their lives in Fresno diminished by the absence of such a theater. Thus far, approximately 1000 of these people have come together to donate money, volunteer, or otherwise show support for Fresno Filmworks.
