Joy Quigley, President, works in film and video production. After stints in Hollywood, New York City, and at Cornell University’s ETV production department, she relocated to Fresno in 2007 and reentered the freelance production world.
Robert Navarro, Vice-President, is a lawyer specializing in the civil rights of the incarcerated and the incremental reforming of the California prison system. He is a sometime poet and artist.
John Moses, Programming Director, teaches Film Studies and English at Fresno City College. He has presented papers and published articles on world cinema, film noir, and film adaptation. He served as Filmworks’ first Board president (2002-2009) and in 2007 was honored for that service with a Horizon Award from the Fresno Arts Council.
Susana Sosa, Secretary, holds an M.A. from Stanford in Art History and is currently working on her Ph.D. in the same discipline. Her dissertation focuses on images (prints, posters, graphic art) and films of early French cinema (1895-1911). She is currently a full-time instructor in the art department at Fresno City College.
Betsy Temple, Treasurer, retired in 2007 after practicing law in Fresno since 1976, and working as an Administrative Law Judge for the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board since 1990. She has been active in the social justice community, including membership on several boards. She has loved “the movies” since childhood. She is an amateur film buff, and is awed by the talent present on the FFW Board.
John Alden is a professional photographer and the owner of JA Photography. He is a member of Professional Photographers of America and the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.
Claudia Arguelles-Miller is the Director of Sales and Marketing for the Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center. She oversees the booking and marketing of events and entertainment at the five facilities, which include the Selland Arena and the William Saroyan Theatre. She has a degree in Fine Arts from San Diego State University and has had a lifelong interest and involvement in the visual and performing arts.
Gloria Burrola is a nationally certified school psychologist and film lover. Originally from Texas, she graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, where she discovered her love of alternative cinema. She has lived in Fresno since 1980. She currently serves on the Yoga Center of Fresno Board of Directors.
Catherine Campbell is a civil rights attorney. Catherine Campbell likes community relations work and has built bridges with other organizations to give FFW the ballast and support it needs. She writes our grant proposals.
Teresa Flores graduated from Fresno State in 2008 with a BA in Art with an emphasis in Drawing and Painting. Her artwork has been shown at the Fresno Art Museum and Artes Americas and her films have been shown in Fresno and Los Angeles. She currently works for the Madera County Arts Council and California Arts Academy.
Bryan Harley is an independent filmmaker and a Fresno native. He graduated from Fresno State in 2007 with a BA in Mass Communication & Journalism and a minor in History. He most recently worked in the marketing department at FOX Sports in Los Angeles. Bryan has been making short films in the central valley since 2001.
Mary Husain teaches a variety of courses in the Mass Communication and Journalism and Communication Departments at California State University, Fresno. Areas of instruction include cultural studies and media persuasion. Her research interests concern the impacts of media representation in entertainment and news genres on diverse communities. In addition, she is the adviser for CineCulture Club, which presents weekly cultural films at Fresno State.
Sasha Khokha covers the Central Valley for The California Report, a statewide public radio program airing on two dozen public radio stations. Her work is also carried on National Public Radio and Public Radio International. Sasha is also a documentary filmmaker; her latest film, Calcutta Calling, follows the lives of girls adopted from India to rural Swedish-Lutheran Minnesota and was featured on PBS’ Frontline/World. Sasha is a graduate of Brown University and the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
Jim Piper has taught English, film study, and filmmaking at Fresno City College since 1965. He has won numerous awards for his short dramatic films, and has published five books, three having to do with film.
Stanley Poss has taught English in various forms including film at California State University, Fresno, from l956 to l995. He’s published numerous essays on literature, politics, and culture in The Nation, The London Review, The Yale Review, and many others. He served as a Fulbright Professor of American literature in Cairo and as an exchange professor in Florida and Humboldt State.
Dixie Salazar is a poet and fiction writer with a novel, two books of poetry and one forthcoming in 2003. She has an MFA from Columbia University, N.Y. and is also a visual artist involved in Fresno activist work and cultural organizations. Currently, she teaches writing and literature at California State University, Fresno.
Paula Singer has a BA in Dramatic Arts from the University of California, Berkeley and a love of films that started before she was a year old. Her lifelong interest in film, especially documentaries and independent films led her to Filmworks as a volunteer. She is retired and has lived in Fresno since 1986.
Cindy Wathen holds a doctorate of law and is the co-author of Remembering Cesar: The Legacy of Cesar Chavez. She’s also a former acquisitions editor and publicist for Quill Driver Books, McGraw-Hill, and the University of California Press, where she participated in UC Press’s film studies program and their partnership with the British Film Institute. Currently, she’s a freelance writer and editor.
